Would The World Fall Apart If You Stopped Holding It Together?

You’re up at 5:00 a.m. and your phone is in your hand before your feet touch the floor. By the time most people are pouring their first coffee, you’ve answered a dozen emails. You’ve also talked a staff member through a problem she could have handled herself.

Then your mother calls. Then your sister needs something. Then the person you’re dating wants your advice and your time. And you handle it, girl. Of course you do, because you’re the strong one, the one holding everything together when things go sideways.

You think it’s the workload. You think it’s the clients who panic at midnight, the team that can’t move without you, the family that never stops needing something. Once this project closes and you hire the right person, things will settle down. That’s what you tell yourself, anyway.

It’s none of that, lady. You could clear your whole calendar on Monday and you would have found a new person to save by Friday.

What “go” mode is costing you

Your body has been trying to get your attention for a while now. It’s the neck and shoulders that feel like concrete by noon and the knot in your stomach at seeing the looming project deadline. It’s waking up at 3:00 a.m., hot and wide awake, with your mind already running through the day’s list. You’ve been on “go” mode for so long that your mind doesn’t know when it’s time to shut off.

The people around you are paying for it too. Your staff gets the short, snappy version of you, and your family gets whatever is left at the end of the day.

What nobody tells you

The reason all your hard work, strategy, and morning routines haven’t fixed this is because you are operating in a Rescuer Identity.

When your subconscious mind believes that your value comes from being needed, you go looking for people to save. It might be fixing the crisis, saving the client, or carrying the weight of your staff’s livelihoods. Either way, you keep attracting and tolerating situations that require you to rescue them.

The question that changes things

Life is a 360-degree mirror. Whatever storm is raging in your business and your relationships is showing you something about what’s going on inside of you. So when a woman sits down with me and starts listing everyone she’s carrying, I ask her one thing: “Where are you in this?”

Most of the time she can’t answer. She has been present for everyone except the one person clawing for her attention, and that person is her.

What all the rescuing was really for

One woman I worked with ran her own company, sat on boards, and was the one her entire family leaned on. In one of our sessions she got quiet, and then she said, “At what point do I say, let me save myself? I’ve been trying to save all these people who don’t even try to save themselves.”

Bam.

I asked her what she had been hoping to get back from all that giving. The answer had nothing to do with her calendar. “I just wanted to know that I belong somewhere,” she told me. “I wanted to feel like I was somebody’s priority.”

That is what all the rescuing had been for.

Once she saw it, things moved quickly. For five years she had been giving her time, her energy, and her money to a man who kept taking. She had always left the door open a crack. This time she called him, closed that door for good, and asked for every dollar back.

She stopped saying yes to work that didn’t pay her. When someone new showed up wanting free advice and a whole lot of emotional caretaking, she caught it right away and ended the conversation.

She told me she felt calmer and brighter. For the first time in years, she was planning the next decade around what she wanted. That went right down to the sunsets she intends to watch and the kind of partner she intends to watch them with.

And nothing fell apart.

Start with you

You can be the woman who leads her team without snapping at them. She sits at dinner with her family and is really there. Her business pays her well and leaves her room to travel. The people you love and the people who work for you get a whole and grounded version of you, and so do you.

If you’re ready to find out where you are in all of this, book a conversation with me here. Let’s talk about what that looks like for you.
